Why do we dream?
Nobody can tell you the purpose of dreaming with certainty, and anyone who does is running ahead of the evidence. What is established is narrower and more useful than a purpose: dreaming happens across the whole night, most densely in REM sleep, in very nearly everyone; the machinery that builds it is known well enough that injury to certain parts of it stops dreaming while REM sleep carries on exactly as before; and the most durable finding about what dreams contain is that they continue the waking life of the person having them — the people, the rooms, the things already on your mind. That last one is the part that matters here. It means a dream is not a message arriving from outside your life. It is made of your life.
Begin with one dreamThe short answer
Dreaming is what the mind does with the night. It is not a signal sent to you and not an interruption of sleep — it is part of how sleep runs. It happens several times a night, in almost everyone, and it is at its longest and most story-shaped during REM sleep, which takes up more of each cycle as morning approaches. None of that is in dispute.
Why it happens at all is genuinely open. There are four serious answers, they overlap, and none of them has won. What has held up better than any of them is a finding about content rather than function: dreams run on the material of the dreamer’s own life. Which is precisely why no general answer to why do we dream will ever tell you anything about last night.
What happens in the brain while you dream
Sleep runs in cycles of roughly ninety minutes, and REM — rapid eye movement sleep — takes a larger share of each cycle as the night goes on. Most adults spend something close to two hours a night in it and remember almost none of it. REM is the state associated with long, vivid, narratively strange dreams. It is not the only one: people woken out of non-REM sleep also report dreaming, usually shorter and flatter, closer to thinking than to a film.
The more interesting fact is that REM and dreaming are not the same thing. After injury to particular regions — deep in the frontal lobes, or where the temporal and parietal lobes meet — people can stop dreaming entirely while their REM sleep continues unchanged. Dreaming is built by specific machinery, and that machinery can be switched off without touching sleep itself. Whatever dreaming is, it is not simply the noise a sleeping brain happens to make.
Do dreams have a purpose?
Four answers are taken seriously, and it is worth holding all four rather than adopting one.
Memory. Sleep consolidates what you learned during the day; that much is well demonstrated. Whether the dream itself does any of that work, or simply runs alongside it, is not settled.
Emotion. A night appears to do something to the charge on a difficult memory — the memory stays, some of the heat comes off it. Dreaming is the obvious candidate for where that happens, and the evidence is suggestive rather than closed.
Rehearsal. Dreams contain a striking quantity of threat, pursuit, social exposure and things going wrong. One long-standing argument is that this is practice: somewhere safe to run the situations that matter.
Nothing. And there is a serious position that dreaming has no function at all — that it is what an intensely active brain produces when it is cut off from the senses, and that the meaning is something we add in the morning.

Every one of those accounts, the last one included, is compatible with the same practical fact: what appears in your dreams is drawn from your life, and the pattern across many of them is readable even where a single night is not.
Why are dreams so strange?
Because the parts of the brain that check whether something makes sense are quiet while you dream, and the parts that produce imagery, emotion and memory are not. So you accept a house that is also your school. You fail to notice that the person you are talking to has been dead for years. You lose the ability to be surprised at exactly the moment it would be most useful.
The strangeness is not a code. It is what association does when nothing is supervising it. That is worth holding onto, because it explains why literal reading fails so reliably: the dream did not select that image in order to say something. It reached for what was near.
Does everyone dream?
Very nearly everyone. What varies enormously is recall. Some people wake with three dreams and can tell you all of them; others spend years certain that they never dream, and then start remembering within a week of writing one line down each morning. In sleep laboratories, people who describe themselves as non-dreamers usually report a dream when they are woken directly out of REM.
There are real exceptions and they deserve naming rather than burying. A small number of people report no dream imagery across a lifetime, some of them the same people who cannot form voluntary images while awake. And after certain brain injuries, dreaming stops completely. Both are rare. If you believe you do not dream, the likelier explanation by a wide margin is that you are not catching them.
Do animals dream?
We cannot ask them, and that limit is real rather than modest. What can be said is this: REM sleep occurs in every mammal that has been studied and in birds, with much the same physiology it has in us. Sleeping animals twitch, run, vocalise. In rats, the patterns of brain activity recorded while learning a maze reappear during sleep in the same order they occurred in. Something is being replayed.
Whether it is experienced — whether there is anything it is like to be that rat at that moment — is a question no experiment has been able to reach. Anyone who tells you their dog dreams about them has moved from evidence to affection. It is a lovely thought and it is not a finding.
Why are my dreams so vivid lately?
One of the most common questions people arrive with, and it usually has an unremarkable answer. Vividness and recall both rise when sleep is broken, because you wake more often and closer to REM. They rise after alcohol, once it wears off in the second half of the night. They rise with fever, in pregnancy, after a stretch of too little sleep, and through weeks that are more emotionally loaded than usual.
Several classes of medication change dreaming sharply as well — some antidepressants, some blood pressure drugs, some drugs taken against malaria — and stopping one can change it as much as starting one. If the change arrived with a prescription, that question belongs with whoever wrote it, not with a dream reader.
None of this makes a vivid stretch less worth keeping. It means the vividness is telling you about the night, not about the content. Those are two different pieces of information, and it is easy to read the first as though it were the second.
Why do we forget almost all of them?
Because the system that lays down long-term memory is largely offline while you dream, and because the first thirty seconds of being awake are unusually hostile to whatever was still there. Reaching for the phone is enough to finish the job. Can science tell you what your dream means?
No — and it is worth being exact about why not, because the reason is more interesting than the refusal.
Science can say why dreaming happens, when it happens, what it is built from, and what tends to show up in it across large numbers of people. That is real knowledge and this page has tried to give it accurately. What no study can do is tell you what your dream last night was about, because the answer is not a property of the images. Water is not sad. A staircase is not ambition. Those associations exist, they differ from one person to the next and from one century to the next, and a book that assigns them is a very old habit written down rather than a finding.
The honest position is narrower and stranger than either the dictionary or the shrug: the meaning of a dream, where it has one, lives in the relationship between the dream and the life of the person who had it. That is not a gap science will close later with better instruments. It is the shape of the thing.
What Sorvatis reads instead
